Need info about my 2200 Swap
Friday, November 25, 2005 3:11 PM
I swapped a 2200 engine in my 97 Cavalier. Its been running on the stock 97 computer but its throwing codes and just recently started throwing more.

I know that the 1st year they came out with the 2200 engine in the cavaliers they didn't have all that extra crap that the 2000-2002 did like the BCM. So it should swap right in place of the 97 computer.

I need to know exactly what year...I think its the 98 computer I need but I want to make sure. Also does anyone know how to identify the ECU to tell thats its exactly the one I need.

I'm throwing 2 O2 sensor codes, TPS code, EGR, and several other emissions codes. Seems like a couple of the codes repeated themselves but I had a total of 12 codes all together.

Car runs fine besides bogging down if I get on the throttle too much too fast like its not getting fuel or spark. Kinda like its cutting in and out. If anyone has any suggestions let me know.

The 2200s were from 98 to 2002, so you are correct.

The only way to really identify what computer is which is by the the car you get it off of or by the seller telling you which car you got it off of. I would try and get one that was either off of a 98 or 99.

I believe 98 or 99 was the last year of EGR, so that would explain most likely why the EGR code. But on top of everything else, you need to identify which year 2200 you have and get the PCM for that year. Search from http://www.car-part.com

The car I got my engine from was a 2002. I do not believe I can use the 2002 computer because of all the extra electrical like the BCM that controls the digital odometer and stuff like that.

I need a 98/99 because I think they use the same system as the 97 cavaliers did, so it should be plug and play.

Yea. Do that. Secondly, it's PCM not BCM.

The digital odometer was on the 99 as well. Why not just use the 02 comp and swap the whole gauge cluster?

Sorry I'm thinking 95-99 again lol. The 95-99 cars odometers are controlled in the PCM, so if you swap out the PCM, you'll have to take it to a speedometer repair shop and have it professionally adjusted. If you do not, it's called odometer fraud and is very illegal. The 00+ cars odometers are controlled in the BCM, so the mileage stays with the cluster.

Actually 2000+ cars the mileage stays with the BCM not the cluster. pre 2000 the mileage stays in the cluster.
They put a 98 2200 3 speed auto ECU in Blitz car today. All codes except for the EGR are gone.
