Friday, November 11, 2005 10:36 AM
i want to buy a few pods, the oil PSI and the water temp temp. gauges. but im wondering, how hard is it to install either? both are electronic (i dont know if that matters), and ive never dealt with gauges before.....

if there is another post or somthing explaing how then that would be great if someone could post it. i searched this forum for a topic like this and i found nothing...

anyways, thanks for the help guys!

I've not got any experience installing gauges, but I have looked at the oil ones and have a basic idea for the water temp. The oil looked as if it had a line, meaning that you would probably tap the oil system. As for the water temp, I'd bet that it probably just connects to the computer in some way.

If they are electronic, then you will have the gauge and the sender unit. The sender unit has to be tapped into whatever fluid you are measuring. You can "t" off of the intake cam tower or remove the old oil pressure sensor from the tower completely. The water temp gauge can be tapped into one of the water passages in the back of the engine block or you could "t" off the black plastic outlet coming from the head (I wouldn't suggest the latter for an accurate reading though).

Then you wire everything up how the instructions tell you to (with running the ground for each unit to either the body or the engine block)

Out of curiousity though, why do you need another water temperature gauge when your car already has one?

Brian, to get my car tuned for boost.. I completely changed my 99 pcm for a 2000 S/C one because its MAP based.. Doing that, I lost my tach and my ect gauge.. But im happy now, 12 lbs feels great

Thanks for the info.. I gotta do this ASAP

Here's how I hooked up mine for my Cyberdyne gauge.

For the Oil Pressure I used the oil galley plug right behind the Thermostat housing on the block. Some people use a tee off of the cam housing. Right above the water temp sensor in the picture. (The unplugged sensor)

3/8" pipe thread. You'll need the shortest 3/8" pipe nipple you can find to go into the factory hole and depending on what size your aftermarket sending unit is you might need a 3/8"x1/4" or 3/8"x1/8" (I doubt it's that small) threaded bushing.

And use some teflon paste on the threads. It will seal better then teflon tape.

I want to hook up a mechanical oil pressure guage in my 03 Sunfire. Isn't there a spot on the back of the block on the Ecotec? Pics would help. Thanks.

Question, can I just tap into the yellow wire on the stock sender for the coolant temp and get an actual reading from that on my gauge? Only asking because I dont wanna drain my coolant right now to install the aftermarket sender..

Thanks.
