Car: 1996 Cavalier 2.2L 5 speed, 2 door.
Ok, this is a weird problem.. I just want to see if I can get some ideas so I can check them out tomorrow morning (I can't do anything in the dark right now).
So I did an oil change on the weekend, and put in 5w30 synthetic (first time using synthetic; engine has 155000km;~96000mi on it). Now I wasn't sure what the volume was that I should put in (assumed something like 3-3.5L; can someone tell me what it actually is?).
Anyways, I guess I put too much in (first off).
I noticed today that I was leaking oil. I went under and tightened the oil pan drain bolt (I guess I didn't tighten enough when I did the change?).. and this seems to have stopped the leak.
I turn the car on and get a Check Oil light, so I put in some oil, and the light goes away (good, fine, dandy, right..). Ok, so I start driving away, and I'm on the highway going 120km/h and notice that the car seems to stutter every second or so. When I get off the highway I pull over to listen to the idle and it sounded like it was missing every couple of seconds.
What I have to check obviously is my plugs, wires and coil packs, and ignition unit (if I'm missing on a cylinder). If it's not missing, what else is it doing?
Could the overfill and/or switch to synthetic have any effect on my engine performance??Please help if you can understand what I mean..
One more thing.. when I start the car, sometimes it will be an very rough and choppy idle unless I press and hold the accelerator for a couple seconds.
It's been doing this since I bought it about 3 months ago.
when the car is warm does it still run rough when u start it? mine does the same thing but only when cold
When an engine skips a beat every few seconds it's
like a hiccup....
It's like the engine saying, "Give me a tuneup".....
Could be plugs, injectors, sensor, but the engine has
indigestion....
Well Leland Sparks
Ive talked to alot of people with cavaliers all years and models, Everyone Ive talked to says cavaliers 2.2L 4 cyls all have a little shake in them, My guess would be motor mounts are cheap quality, My old 89 2.2Lcavalier idled really smooth, Almost didnt notice the engine running. Well you have a 96 Cavalier? How long has it been since the fuel filter has been changed? Throttle body could be dirty with carbon? If you got an check engine light on, You might want to get the codes scanned.
Good luck .

Fuel filter changed two months ago with the fuel pump.
I'm changing the plugs tomorrow morning when I get up. I'm pretty sure its just that.
Thanks all.
Im pretty sure its the Crank Position Sensor, very common on the 2.2L
plugs prolly need to get done anyway and will hopefully pay for themselves in fuel economy
if u overfilled your engine with oil your plugs could be oil soaked.

Yah, think it's the plugs.. I got my engine code reader in the mail today and it says cyl. 3 is missing.. and I couldn't get the plug out of #3 because it's stuck.
I busted the insulator off now so it's stuck pretty damn good... that's a real piss off.. hehe.
Wish me luck
I have a 2.4 that does that and i was told its most likely the fuel filter cuz noone replaces them as much as they should be and that theirs prolly a little cloggin
