just got my turbo in and not sure if its bad. it has some oil in the compressor housing and in the hot side pipping. the shaft also wiggles back and forth a very very small amount

is my turbo bad or is this normal for a used turbo?
tell me what you think

I dunno.. I don't think the shaft should make a clunking noise like that or move that easily? I don't know much about turbo's, but that didn't look right. Hopefully there will be more input.

I duno about the oil in the tubes, but the shaft needs to have play, the play allows oil around it when operating....if there was no play = no oil = metal to metal = no worky

Well, okay, I stand corrected.

There should not be oil in the hot side. That is a sign of blown turbo seals.

Your shaft play doesn't seem too bad, and the oil could be caused by PCV stuck open.

the guy i bought it off of had the oil return line blow out on him. could something like that cause the oil to surge into the hot side? or could that be the cause of the blown seal?

Shaft play is more than I'd like, but not out of the ordinary for a journal bearing turbo..... If it were ball bearing and had that much play then it would be toast. Oil can come from several different sources, you need to check your exhaust manifold too, if its in there as well (on the head side flange), then most likely your oil is coming from a malfunctioning pcv or other engine component. If the manifold is clean and the oil is only from the turbo down, then your seals are shot and you should either rebuild or pick up a new one.

The return line blowing off shouldn't effect the seals or cause a leak into the exhaust housing unless he took so long to realize it that he lost all oil pressure in which case the turbo is probably shot.
