Noob w/ a stripper...

I'm sure I just committed a cardinal sin - but c'mon, the headline worked, no?

Just saying "hello." After putting up with an aging and rusting '94 Century wagon, I moved into a relatively clean '02 Cavalier sedan with 66xxx miles. Dark green metallic, 2.2L, M94, RDS CD/cassette - but otherwise a "stripper" - no cruise, no power locks or windows. I can live with it; I had less equipment with my first car ('75 Dodge Dart Swinger, 7000 miles). It 'matches' my brother's '02 LS coupe (a paradox, his is fully loaded) in our garage.

Only had it a few days already, but I love driving the thing - and I'm already parsing the forum for future mods. I'm not planning on too much, but I'd like to at least fix my reverse switch, equip the car with cruise and (should $$ allow) install a set of Toyo tails.

I'll try not to be the stereotypical newb (I DO use the search function, after all), so I'll stay out of the way. Hope I can contribute (somehow), but you all know so much more than I do already....

welcome to jbody. nice name, and power windows/locks just make your car slower (at least that's what i tell myself when i'm going through a drive-thru )

Okay, apparently clever headlines aren't tolerated. Apologies to the J-body gods.

Still have the Swinger? What kind of shape was the body in?

Swinger was sold a long time ago; I'd replaced it with a '94 Century Wagon before heading to college. I bought the Dart from the second owner; the first was the proverbial little old lady from Clearwater, FL - where the car spent most of its life. For its age, it was decently equipped - Slant six, Torqueflite, A/C, P/S.

(really old, really crappy pic...)

Body was in pretty good shape; wore its original paint with only minor surface rust (still had original dealer emblem and factory check stamp in trunk). I had major troubles with the 1-bbl Holley where I had to rebuild the choke mechanism monthly, and also had considerable headaches with weatherstripping - it was all dry-rotted after years in the Floridian sun. Systems that went did so because of pure age. A fun drive home from school with no brakes meant a new master cylinder; a fun drive home from work at 11 pm with no headlamps led to a new ballast resistor (screwy MoPar electricals...).

It proved to be a bit of a headache at times, but it was a fun car.

Cavalier seems to be quite fun, too. It's only been five days into the journey, but I find myself longing to get in and drive. Never thought I'd feel that way about a J-body.

I love Swingers, especially after I helped turn a 1970 Dodge Dart Swinger that scored 100/100 at the Mopar Nationals into a $300K G-Machine with a 572 Hemi with Direct Port Nitrous Injection. Hell the rear end setup on that car was over $10K alone.
