Just curious what turbos you guys are running with your ecotecs?? I know I wanna go T3/T4 hybrid but what trim?? Looking for something that spools quick and is capable of some good boost numbers.
SEARCH!!

Yeah, search button blocked, I'm at work, no CPU at home. I scrolled through some of the old post, nothin.
How much money do you want to spend and how much power do you want to make?

60 trim would look good. might get some lag, maybe not, depending on the rest of your setup, but a little lag is ok, because traction is a bitch.
I want to share something with you - the three sentences that will get you through life. Number one, 'cover for me', Number two, 'oh, good idea, boss', Number three, 'it was like that when I got here.'
Not looking to spend crazy money, something reasonable. I plan on throwing a set of rods in it (either eagles or lsj), just need to research it some. I'd like to make 250 - 275 cruising, and be able to crank the boost up and hit higher numbers for short periods of time.
I like how people just throw out random numbers around here...
Well.. cruusing around I could deal with 225-275 but then at SOMETIMES I'd like to crank it up..
Well unless youre using megasquirt or port fueler you'd have to stop... retune your ecu with hp.. up load it, fine tune for a while so you can run higher boost... (save that file) and then when you wanna run lower boost you stop and upload the low boost file...
A decent good kit is the Hahn Stage 2... period... its good for your all around daily kit, can be modified in hypsy's case for more power for drag racing. it comes with everything you need...
I will keep my opinions to myself on the fuel management
other then that a nice t3/t4 is good.. .63 ar housing and 50 trim compressor and intake works well.. it's what I have...

Yes, I'm planning on running the port-fueler,
Click, thats why i was asking about it in the thread right near this one. Im not just throwing numbers around I'm giving my goal for h/p numbers so someone on here can help me find what I need to make it happen. Thanks for your suggestion though.
Not spending tons of money, you'd be good with a T3/T04E 54 trim turbo. It's good to about 400hp so you'll have plenty of turbo to spare, plus it should spool resonably quick. A better option (which would also cost a bit more) is to go with a GT2860RS aka the Disco Potato. It's good to about 350hp so you'll still be ok with turbo size, but it'll also spool much quicker since it's a ball bearing turbo with a smaller turbine wheel and housing.

Disco Potato <3.
Small ball bearing turbo. Quick spool and loud as a mofo , what else could you possibly ask for?
Garrett's new Ecotec turbo kit includes the Disco Potato. If it was WAY too small, they'd have chosen something else larger to go with that engine (they are Garrett, they have enough turbos to choose from). A GT2860RS would be a very good turbo for a stock Ecotec running low to moderate boost levels.

Man i want a loud whiney ass turbo.. which one would @!#$ scream for me

turbo size isn't generic to displacement, its about VE and RPM too
a car engine is just an overcomplicated air pump. compressor maps are based upon corrected mass flow
if you put a turbo that matches your peak power band, you'll have a car that pulls hard as hell
for example;
stock ecotec + turbo kit
you'd probably want a power band from around 3700-6500 seeing as peak torque is around 4k
in which case, a disco potato would be pretty sweet, or a T3 super 60, or an upgraded disco to a GT2871R
T3/t4 hybrids are bordering on too large with the stock redline of 6500rpm and without cams.
of course, now we're getting into strength problems with the bottom end
if you have some flow mods and a fortified bottom end, its a whole new ball game
a higher redline and a volumetric efficiency thats higher in the RPM band means larger turbo time
T3/T4 hybrids and GT30s would be best for this range.. you'd be looking at a power band from as early as 5000 (FULL spool) and a redline around 8000 rpm if not a slightly higher.
After that, IATs will become an issue, which means the GT35s would come into play.. power band could stay relatively the same, but even more revs would yield more power up to around 9k RPM or so
I've got Turbonetics T3/T4 hybrid, starts spooling at 2500, full boost by 3000 (14psi). BTW it's loud as hell.

4 Cams...32 Valves...5 Liters...This Could Get Fun!
yeah pj my t3/t4 with 50 trim and 63 ar's starts spo0ling at 2800 and full spools by 3500 or so and I shift at 7k with comp turbo cams...
but my turbo spools a lot faster due to cams... it spooled later and was full spool at 4200 without cams

anyone here ever tought about using a mitsu. tdo6 20g?!?!??
btw; for someone who is working for maybe a 400-425whp drag car???

Drive It Like You Stole It
I'll be using a TD04 on my build. My goal is between 224 and 250HP and the td04 can get me there with proper tuning.
You need to decide what you want first. A T3/T4 will be more adventageous for topend power, but a smaller turbo like a 16g is what most people are looking for the boost comes on quick and is very linear as opposed to a 20G that kicks you in the pants with a spike of power when it spools up, not a bad feeling at all, but overkill for 90% of peoples attainable goals.
The TD04 in my case gives me the fast spool and quick response I need for SM in autocross, a T3/T4 would be a waste on my car for my applications. Unless your going to be pushing up into the 300->400HP a T3/T4 is going to be a waste IMO. Remember theres always a cost benefit and the turbo is only one part of the entire system, other things to consider are the size of your intercooler, charge pipes. Possibly cam upgrades, engine modifications etc...

Are any of these kits you mentioned compatible with a 2.2L ecotec motor using a 4T40-E trans?
I would love to go turbo but don't have much knowledge on weither or not you could use a turbo on automatics.Any comments are greatly appreciated.
Saab td04 is perfect for me...full spool @ 2500ish(7psi) and from the dnyo sheets the hp didnt start to level and drop until 6100 rpm.
GT2860RS FTW!

I have a TD06 17c in my house off of my truck. Always wanted it on the cav, but its pretty big for 2.2 liters and retaining a stock rpm level. I have a 20G on my truck now with the 14cm housing. With 4.3 liters of engine and a stock convertor, it took forever to spool. The new 3k convertor hurried things up a bit.
You should go with a stage 2 hahn for a good street/strip kit with more options down the road. I, personally, would probably go with a SAAB kit, as would never really want more than 225-250 out of my cavalier. Might even do the GM S/C.
So you have to retune your ECU even if you are running a stage 2 map and HPtuners? I wonder if that is a N/A thing? On the typhoon, once I get it tuned in, the computer will compensate my fuel anytime it sees 0 boost up to 3bar. I can change the boost level from the cab, and it will keep the tune correct. I was really hoping that with a 2bar map, I could tune for 14psi, and then set the boost to 8 and it would still be in a decent tune. Hmmm.
