Newb power question...
Saturday, May 14, 2005 11:22 AM
I have a question for all of you who might have some tips for me about this. How do you all maintain a decent power flow when you've added so many electronic accessories and modifications to your car without it taking a huge toll on your car's battery. I've got a few neons in my car right now. I plan on adding a few things to my car little by little but I was wondering if there any things that I should do before adding a whole lot of electronics to my Sunfire so that I don't overkill. Are there any high performance batteries that might help, etc? I'm a newb at this, and I just want to make sure I'm getting off on the right foot. Right now I have several neons in my Sunfires interior that I'm running off of a small swtich box that I attached the the drivers side of my console compartment which is running off of the power from an empty slot in my fuse box.

first off all the wires under your dash run on a 12v system, you can splice into many of them to give power to say neons... you could get a second battery and put it in the trunk or you could purchase a capaciter. optima is a good company for batteries

a lot of places make smaller 12volt batteries that you could use. i would wait and see what kind of electrical problems if any you have first. if it's just some lighting you may not need to do anything except upgrade the stock battery and wiring.

Hopefully that power wire you're running is fused, even though its running off the fuse block... Flames are definately a bad thing.

For a performance type battery, Optima Batteries are a decent brand. They can handle a bit more than the OEM style batteries. Many will recommend the yellow top.

they are ok..but i really don't see a battery that large being needed if he runs it as a secondary. as an upgrade for his stock battery, yes.

If I got a second battery, what would the connection look like? Would one battery run off the other?

yes...you run one positive wire from the first battery to the second. ground accordingly. and fuse that wire at both ends.

i'd wait on adding a second battery. neons take next to no power, i could run over a dozen neons, 2 tv's a play station, a power inverter, and the cars radio for several hours without any issues.
