Power Steering Pump

Just a quick question, did a search on this after cming across some info in the library. I remember reading that the ION/VUE came with an electric version (i know the new cobalt one doesnt work for our cars) but i was wondering if this one would bolt up. It did say it has a plate bolted where the regular pump would have been. So I thought it might be something we could do. Let me know. Flame me and die lol. talk to you guys later!

Are you talking about putting in electronic steering into you car over a standard hydraulic powersteering.

Yes, the information i got was this quoted from the 2.2 (2003) informaiton in the library
"The Ecotec 2.2-liter in the ION and VUE has an electric power steering pump, rather than a hydraulic pump driven by a cam gear. Because the pump is operated by electricity from the vehicle’s charging system, there is no parasitic power loss operating the power steering, and fuel economy is improved. The ION and VUE have a plate over the cam cover where the power steering pump would otherwise mount." So i was wondering considering that engine was also for our cavs would it work

I don't have an ecotec either but it couldn't be too hard to marry the 2 systems together. All it should take would be to take the stock pump setup out, join the old lines to the new pump assembly, wire the pump and bleed the system. The only hitch i can see would maybe be if the electric setup produced more pressure than the stock rack and pinion could handle.

There is no actual pump in the electronic PS system for those vehicles. There is a motor at the base of the steering column that assists in the turning of the wheel. The system blows and I would advise you to stay as far away from it as possible. I see no way to make the system function together on a J car.

That does sound like a dumb system^^^ I guess that why no one has done it yet.

It is a dumb system. They have a torque input and position sensors in the base of the column. If one of them doesnt work quite right you loose your power assist. That was always fun in a G6 mid corner. I probably replaced 1 per week in G6's and that doesnt include the ones that were bad right out of the box. The system is overcomplicated and needs a lot more development before it is ready to be "reliable". I hate it in my moms Cobalt SS. Every time i hit a bump the wheel is suddenly jerked to one side or the other. The torque sensor sees an input and determines Im trying to turn the wheel, so it tries to assist.
