04 Sunfire 2.2 Eco. Help me gain more HP.
Monday, October 08, 2007 7:29 PM
Hey guys what up.

Soon i am going to purchase a weapon R CAI along with Tsudo Headers, Catalytic Converter, and a cat back exhaust for my 04 Sunfire 2.2 Ecotec and so i was wondering what kind of catalytic converter should i get? And for the cat back its going to be 2.5 piping all around but still have no clue on which one i should purchase.....I want a good deep sound not a ricer sound....Any suggestions would help. Sound clips would be awesome too....Or is this a bad way to start modding my car? I will also take suggestions on what would be a good idea to put on my car....pretty much what i am asking is for you guys to help me out and tell me if you were me what would you add to your car first? I want more hp so pretty much basic things would help..thanks again.

Those are great ways to start modifying your car. Intake, Header, and Catback exhaust is what most people start with. Magnaflow and Borla make a low tone Catback. I have the Vibrant Catback Exhaust and I like the way that sounds as well.

I have heard good things about vibrant (clears throat*).
Opening up the airways is the way to go with first mods, but if you lighten your flywheel, get a better clutch so the HP is directly transfered to the ground, and reduce your overall rotational mass, you should see some HP increases.

I;m not sure if you have already, but from what i hear (not sure if it's true or not) if you switch to synthetic oils, it protects your engine better and you might even see a HP.

eh... not enough to notice really.

if you don't want the raspy sound, get the longest resonator and muffler you can possibly fit under the car. that will help.

and personally, I'd stay away from Tsudo (read: pseudo) headers as they are knock-offs. I'd go with companies that better support the .org, as in Pacesetter. save up and get the ceramic coated header from them. Gravana Tuning and Turbo Tech has good prices on these.

i also have an 04 sunfire. i bought the pacesetter header, magnaflow cat, thrush 28" glasspack, and dynomax super turbo muffler. the cat, glasspack and muffler are all 2.5 i/o but i'm running 2 1/4 piping. i get a real nice deep sound. i notice a decent gain from stock but really nothing to brag about. also, go with stiffer engine mounts.

diffently get the ceramic coated header. i wish i had. when i had my header installed, the shift cable sits on top of the header and gets really hot. i just recently had to run the shift cable under the header until i can get around to buying a coated header. i have a friend who also has the stainless pacesetter header and his shift cable broke due to sitting on top of the header and getting really hot. and plus, the temp in the engine bay right now is insanely hot. i have the rksport intake for the ecotec but its sucking in all that heat from the header. heat is bad. lol.

i have AEM Cold Air Intake, Pacesetter armor coated 4-1 header (ceramic coated), custom 2.25" exhaust piping with magnaflow high flow cat, magnaflow 4x8" oval muffler with tip and soon to be installed 18" magnapack resonator. i currently have a vibrant 12" resonator, but ill be selling that resonator for $40 btw if you want to buy one.

i like what i have, so if you start there, those are some things to consider.

carcustoms.net
aplusperformance.com
turbotechracing.com
gravanatuning.com

those sites are good sites to buy from, karo at carcustoms.net can get just about everything if not everything for the ecotec.

Get a 4:2:1 header, the 4:1 is more for top end rpms and would be great if you knew you were going to go supercharged later on, but on all motor the 4:2:1 is a lot more rounded in boosting the hp in the lows, mids and higher rpms.

basically just do what you can afford, but dont go cheap. you get what you pay for. if you cant afford a good quality part, save up for it

once you start modding, you dont want to stop
