Help With 2.5" Turbo Exhaust
Sunday, June 17, 2007 4:55 PM
Okay guys heres my story. With the turbo setup I was running a 2.5" exhaust from the turbo downpipe back with a N1 style exhaust (It was a 2.5" catback off, but still 2.5" all the way back). Well I got pulled over a few weeks ago for my license plate being in the window since it fell off and was just waiting for some time to put it back on the bumper. Anyway the cop was as usual a RICHARD and then he commented on how I should be careful because my exhaust was altered, but he said he wouldn't give me a ticket for that. So last weekend I removed the N1 style muffler and installed a 2.5" Force from summit with the hopes that it would be a little quieter and look more OEM so the cops wouldn't bother me. Well just last night I got pulled over for my exhaust being altered since the motorcycle cop was like 12 inch's behind me the whole time. I told him some bs story and he let me go. So my dilemma is I want to keep my 2.5" for the turbo performance, but need it to be quieter and then I was just going to run an OEM style exit to help give the effect or I might even be able to get away with the N1 style if its just quieter. I am wondering would running maybe a 2.5" resonator reduce some of the noise in my system? Any input would be greatly appreciated and I have searched through some of the other threads, but would just like to get a little more info or advice. Thanks in advance!

Reading your mods, I'd say perhaps your best bet would be to install a high flow cat and resonator. That should quiet it down a good bit. However if the cops in your area really are that bad, they're probably still going to harass you if they know what they're looking at, because obviously the J's didn't come with any kind of FI, and, well, if they're looking for something to pick on that much, they'll probably hear the turbo spooling or whatnot.

You're lucky if they were commenting on the exhaust being modified that they didn't get down and look under the car for a cat. Obviously it's illegal everywhere to not have one.

also if you want to make it look stock what you could do is get a oval satin finished magnaflow muffler made for FI cars w/ a 2.5 in/out and have a 2.5 turndown to make it look stock. That mated w/ the high flow cat and res and you should be good to go.

or just get a cut out and a super turbo muffler. Run the muffler on the streets and the cut out when need be.

I know in delaware you can have a aftermarket exhaust on your car as long as it's not over a certian DB rating. If I ever had a cop pull me over and try to give me a ticket I would tell him to test it and laugh in his face when it sounds totaly legal.

yea here in missouri as long as the car doesnt exceed the db rating they cant do anything and in my little town they never carried the equipment in the car to test it so all they could do was pull you over and tell you that they thought your exhaust was too loud.

I have always had good luck with resonators doing the trick.
I had to use 2 very long and big resonators to get my straight through muffler to be tolerable on my old Chevy Prizm LSi.
I had to use 1 short resonator to get my turbo muffler to be toned down on my 03 Sunfire.

For you, use a couple big ones.
