2.4 swap questions (also wiring for VSS, dont ban me)
Wednesday, December 13, 2006 1:57 PM
I'm swapping a 2000 2.4L, into a 2.2ohv 2001 car, using 1998 wiring harness, using a 2.4 getrag bell housing.
I don't know if anybody ever did this before... is it possible to hook up 1998 2.4 harness with a 2000 ohv car? I have the PCM, and the VIN of the origional car... and it looks like it may swap in without trouble. should I be able check to see if they actually do all match up, or does it go in perfect.
could I just use brass fittings to hook up the single wire knock sensor to the 2000 block? ... I mean it just senses "knocking."
doesn't the 2000 2.4 engine use a 2 wire o2 sensor because I saw a single wire?

VSS - I want to make sure that the sensor wiring from the 98 isuzu tranny works with the getrag. does it have the same pulses for mesuring the VS in the first place? or would I have to live without an speedometer If I do this swap?

werent the electronics updated in 2000, thus making any pre-2k swaps into 2k + cars more involved? or vice versa

Best if you used 2000 and newer harness and pcm, more of a plug and play. just for starters, the "passlock" system of the newer cars uses the bcm module, then communicates to the pcm a fuel enable. the older cars "passlock" wires plug directly into the i/c assembly. I am currently putting a 2000 2.2 into a 96 and am changing the complete wiring harness for the car.
go to ebay and buy the gm service manuals for the years you have, range from 10 to 40 for a set, i have used mine alot for wiring and trouble shooting info

question 1 is answered... thank you for your input.

2.) could I just use brass fittings to hook up the single wire knock sensor to the 2000 block? ... I mean it just senses "knocking."

3 VSS - I want to make sure that the sensor wiring from the 98 isuzu tranny works with the getrag. does it have the same pulses for mesuring the VS in the first place? or would I have to live without an speedometer If I do this swap?

use a 00-02 2.4 5spd harness , it will save you alot of headaches

and the 2.2 trans usually has a different final drive than the 2.4

1)If you already have a '01 car and '00 Engine, just make the changes you need to in the harness to make everything 2k+, then sell the '98 ECM for a 00-02 ECM.
2)Not sure what the question is, but you can drill/tap the hole in the block for the old style sensor.
3)The VSS will stay the same, same pulse count. I believe the plug for the reverse light is different, but I cant remember for sure.

instead of drilling and tapping a bigger hole on the block, would i just be able to use brass fittings(like finding the right brass adaptor for a fluid like. ie: oil lines to a turbo)
I could drill it... but the problem is finding a tap bit (preferably using a clutch) to tap it.

I took out the entire wiring out of the car from the engine harness to the headlight harness, and throughout the entire car. hooking it all back would be gay... so hopefully somebody can buy it and i'll use the money to just get a 2000 engine harness and pcm... I didn't think it would be "that" gay... Zeds have power windows, sunroof, and A/C... which my car doesn't.. hooking everything up, would take close to a year. so I lucked out on a 2000 engine for my 2001 car.

Yes, find a buyer for your '98 harness, and pick up a 00+ 2.4 Engine harness..... ALOT less work. The engine harness will plug and play with your stock body harness, and make your swap so much easier. You wont have to worry about the knock sensor then too.
