Weight reduction gone wild
Wednesday, April 19, 2006 9:03 PM
Alright, I have been thinkin about weight reduction for a long while, and so I said to hell with it and started. So far, after my first night, this is what I got so far.

Stage 1

Check it, you can see straight thru to the wall behind the car, good bye rear seats

Oh yeah, big pile of cloth and plastics! Rediculous! Gotta love it!

Yup, its all out, almost, more to come out tomorrow

Sub is out, along with the heavy piece of 3/4 inch slab of MDF that the HUGE 2.4 sqft MDF box sat on

Everything except the carpet out of the trunk, thats for tomorrow

Front seats out along with pretty much everything else, only the driver seat is goin back in unless absolutely needed

Only stuff left is the door panels, out tomorrow tho!

KRIKEY! We've come to observe exotic audiophile, now we don't see one in the area but we have found his nest in this taggled web of speaker wire, rca's, and other random cables and connectors

Yup, all that weight from the head liner, GONE! That had to be a stiffling half a pound! WAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! GM, I'm onto the motion of your jive!

Seriously, the carpet alone had to be at least 60 lbs alone! Wow, I was surprised.

More pics as the stages continue.
And if anyone is interested in anything, its listed in the north east forum.
post!

Oh no buddy! This is just stage 1! The sun roof is comin out eventually, the side windows r definately goin 2 b replaced with lexan, and I have to see safety regulations, cause the front and rear might become lexan as well. The doors r gonna b gutted, all the excess steel on the interior is goin 2 b cut out. But I NEED air conditioning! Wait, no, no I really don't! More poundage 2 come out!

I have a short throw shifter, just waiting to get all this done b4 I install it.

Yeah, those r sunfire guages

More to come! Woot!

I just wanna know what the owner of the car weights, cause he may also want to go on a diet , all this weight shaving with a fat driver would be very funny and all, I know some Honduh kids that strip @!#$ like this but could afford to shed like 50 lbs themselves, But good luck with the car, hope it does what u want it to
Re: Weight reduction gone wild

You're WAY behind me
Yeah, I could afford to lose 50 lbs myself though.

hahaha i hear ya, although i've only got about 30 to lose...

Ragin, don't forget about unsprung and reciprocating weight... lightest wheels possible, lighter flywheel, lighter pulleys, etc... get a braille lightweight racing battery (i know pro-imports.com has em in the vw section, should fit a jbody)..... then there's always cutting out the spare tire well and riveting in a sheet of aluminum... or fiberglass/carbon... what all engine stuff you do you have planned?

jared peshek - HAHAHAHAHA!!!!! I remember a post about that way back when, weight reduction for you! HAHAHAHA!!!! Makes perfect sense tho, all the stuff you take out of the car and then you turn around and sit in it and there goes the weight back up again! I'm 192lbs, 6'2" I think thats just about average for a kid my height.

97cavie24ls - I am definately goin for karo's class in weight reduction. I have been meaning to talk to him about it. Does anyone know off hand how much he weighs? I know with his front end clip and custom dash, I'm not gonna get there, but I wanna come close.

scarab - I am really considering the lighter flywheel and if I could find lighter pulleys that didn't screw with their size I would definately go for it. The battery on the other hand, I never even thought about it, good call! Wheels, from what I have seen, tend to be about the same weight no matter where you go, got any ideas? I'm really not one for drag racing, I wanna do more of the scca type probably next spring. I just got the ADDCO anti-sway bars, goin for the tein SS coilovers with the incar controller.

Rodimus Prime - Dude, ur not kidding! I have had a couple decks in this car, first my kenwood p907, one of the original indash pull out screen decks, it had two hide away units. Then I had my Pioneer AVIC-N1, that has its own hideaway unit, plus, rear view camera, and navigation, so I have wires all over the place, and I still had the hideaway units and wiring from my old kenwood in there too! Yeah, I get lazy sometimes!

Day 2

So I finished ripping out the trunk, so much crap in there its not even funny!

Wait a second, whats this? Can anyone tell me? I'll give you a hint, You can't bolt it on or bolt it off

Here's your answer! Yup, the start of stage 2. I figure, stage 1 is taking out the unnessesaries, stage 2 cutting out the unnessesaries. etc etc etc

Just incase you couldn't figure it out, heres the mirror side!

Yummy, I can't wait to gut that! I was actually thinking about only keeping a shell and welding the entire door to the rest of the car. I heard that there are carbon fiber "race only" doors available. Anyone know if they are available for our cars and where I could get em?

I finished early cause power tools are loud and I don't wanna piss off the rest of the neighbors.

Thanks for the positive feedback guys, I really appreciate it, especially from established members.

Oh yeah, totally forgot about the engine mods, sorry. Watchin overhaulin and playin with myself!

Its stock now, has the GM charger on it, takin off the charger to port out the runners for direct port nitrous. I want at least a 50 shot. I also have a spare motor at my parents house. My buddy pete, 98redcavz24 is in the middle of his own motor build, so once he gets his done, I wanna see how that works out before I start my own. I also want to build for scca racing, not competative, just for fun, but its recommended between 300-350 hp. I don't think its going to be too hard to reach that. Of course without the nitrous. I contacted some of the people who run local runs and they said that nitrous can actually increase track times. Nitrous is for me Also, thinking about turbo aswell. But, I wanna see how Josh F's numbers come back from the dyno. I have everything for a turbo setup except the turbo. soo....... we will see. Right now I wanna concentrate on weight and handling.
