Home Brew intake questions
Sunday, April 09, 2006 6:16 AM
Hey guys, trying to build my own intake, got a few questions.

What size is the opening for the TB going to be?

Can I put a taper on it so I can put a big air filter on then just have it taper down to the TB or would that be counter productive. I work for a sheetmetal shop fabricating Ductwork so I am trying to make it out of metal.

What is the clearance from the TB to the hood? I read somewhere that somebody put an intake on and when you shift the engine moves and dents the hood.

Thanks for the help guys.

PS.. Do I use th DOT 3 or DOT 4 for my clutch??

From my experience, I have the RSM 62 MM TB, with my "home-brew" type setup it is 62MM alltheway to the TB to the Air Filter...You will want no restictions, or as few as possible in the setup;

Motor movement should not be that much of a problem. If your engine is hitting the hood...You would know about if it was...believe me. Put this question out of your mind.
This is not a worry..especaily if you have the RK Sport mounts. Just search around a little bit more and you will see what some of the setups out there look like.

The most you may run into is a case of the duct-work for the assembly rubbing slightly on the hood area...that Fire blanket stuff. Ohh, one more thing, your not going to pickup like 25 HP be doing this either. More like 4-5 or 5-6 maybe.

Yea, sure...its worth it. But, you have to do something with the exhaust side of it too! Modding, is not just 1 thing and your done, its a collection of things that equal the greater amount.

Look at what Ive got on my cavi so far...it takes some time + money..to get there.
And I'm still not quite where I want to be at yet!

Start with you intake, then get your exhaust setup, after thabnk consider a pulley or engine mounts as your next step.

So, if i went with a 62mm on a 2.2L ohv, and a DIY port and polish, would i notice a big hp gain, or engine response? Or both.

We're also going to do the multi-angle valve job in the shop, so this car should at least run decent.

i've heard bad things about the 62mm tb for NA on our engines. You may want to look into that more bc alot of people feel its too big for a car without force induction. You would probably be better off with something a little smaller.
