sub frame...how much can i cut off
Thursday, February 02, 2006 2:36 PM
i bet you guys havnt heard this one everyday so heres my question.....
the section of our huge sub-frame back where the downpipe is..theres only like 4 inches of space there, not much at all....if i cut away at that to make the opening bigger..what will happen if anything?
i mean can i cut SOME away?

Why do you need to cut for a downpipe? My 2.5" dp fit through there with plenty to spare, and I know of people who put 3" dp's in without cutting...

im not trying to install a dp im trying to fit a tubular header..as seen below......
and as you can see its gonna be a tight fit and i am determined to fit it in there...i think as along as i can cut away part of the subframe i can make it fit but i need to know what will be affected...cus if THIS doesnt fit i have to have one custom made and custom = $$$$$

Who makes it, and is it for the Cavalier/Sunfire?

no it is not for the cav / fire it is made for the HO quad engine..which is what i have in my car...TRS is the only company that makes it and it is HIGHLY recommended by the quad guys...without it i have no other options

looks hot.......and here is what you do to install it.....without cutting anything.

lower the subframe and then install the the header then put the subframe back on.......it might be a tight fit.

Yea i spell liek wrong get over it.

thanks thats a good idea ..the problem i have the issue of this header being larger than the opening itself..not to mention do you see the angle that thing has at the firewall...thats right where the rack and pinion is if im not mistaken

You can remove it it total but you Must have some sort of support there. Your gonna need some kinga Subframe brace / K brace.

I think you should be fine to make that opening a little bigger. Be careful not to cut any of your power steering lines though.

A sub-frame brace may be a good idea (like mentioned above). Just make sure it is made from steel (some people are selling some aluminum ones on this board).

Can't you just drop it down rather than cut it, like for a front sway-bar install.

maybe i misunderstand....i have no problem droping it down to install but as soon as i bolt it back up the hole is still gonna be too small(what am i missing? im pretty sure any movement of this subframe up or down will affect my suspension will it not?
and as far as a subframe brace i already have the "standard" one that goes the forward part of the subframe..but mine is aluminum cus i was afraid of it rubbing something and messing up my subframe should i make another like that but out of steal for the rear part???
thanks so much guys!

im saying to drop the subframe to install it.............the hole looks small but is fairly big....and should be bigenough to istall that.i dont think your engine will move enough to make it rub........i had 3 inch downpipe and had plenty of room

I think what he is sayin is that he has enough room to slip it in to install it, its just that when he goes to bolt it up to the head, thats where he runs into a problem. I say cut the fncker! You can always go back later and reinforce it. Besides, its bolted to the car in so many locations it shouldn't matter. How much do you have to cut approximately?

So then what does the manufacturer of the header recomend you do to install thier product ? Don't get me wrong it does look damn hott but what good is it if it won't fit the car it was made for ? That makes no sence. I'd say contact them and see what they say you need to do to install it. Cutting the frame = VERY BAD ! and any reputable company would know that. They may sell a modified frame member that would need to be put in place of the original but any company that tells me to cut up my frame just so their part will fit is a company I won't buy from cause they're idiots!

Call them up and see what they say. Let that be your desideing factor.

*sigh*....this header is NOT made for a Jbody..and the website says it wont fit.....HOWEVER...the maker of the header willing to try personally to help me fit it in my car to compliment my HOquad...it was originally made for HO Nbodies(with no subframe) but what can the real differnce be? as long as it follows the same down pipe path it should come CLOSE ya think?...anyway,i feel my new engine is usless without a header so im gonna be the first

well considering what alls down there i cant take much out to begin with...i mean ya got the steering components, and then bolts right beside it which i dont want to cut out ofcourse.....i guess maybe i was lookin at cuttin a couple inches all the way around to enlarge the opening..depending on how it goes after i install it and bolt the subframe back up.

Last resort, If you really dont have the room, cut a pice of the firewall / Floor board out, As if you were to tunnel for a drivetrain. Then make a steel patch, weld in place, grind smooth, and prime to prevent rust. That would effect the structure of the car much less then cutting up your subframe brace.

I suggest that if you have a viable comment for the topic at hand, then post, IF NOT Stay the pudge out. Stop trying to flame people who actually know something about the topic at hand. Obviously you dont, so stop trying to bump the topic and stop wasting bandwidth with your USELESS Dribble.
