The Forbidden Question...
Wednesday, February 01, 2006 5:35 PM
Yes, yes its yet ANOTHER question about the dreaded speed limiter...
I'm not asking how to remove it or any crap like that, but im curious how fast a stock sunfire GT (or cav Z24) would go with-out the speed limiter. I wouldn't think of doing this but im just curious.

lower your car, less drag, faster top speed!!!

I wouldn't say that high. Maybe hit the 130 mark but I doubt it'd go more then that stock.

Semper Fi SAINT. May you rest in peace.

On a Mustang Dyno, which can do a simulated road loaded (drag factor) test that most consider to be fairly accurate, I watched a 170 whp J do 126mph when it stopped accelerating.

i once tried to top out my cav. it took sooo long that I just stoped trying.

I dunno but I have heard stories of cavi's going 130-140

mine is the 2200 mostly stock and even when I hit the 108 barrier it definatly feels like it has more in it

I have run 133MPH in my cav. @!#$ was so unstable that I was pissing my pants. I had the chance to use the closed road and I took it though. Took a little over a quarter mile to get there and I have never had such a rush before. I don't think I'll do that outside a track again though. Closed road or not.

I used to race cars, now I race myself.

It's disturbing people admit to doing this on public roads.

Well from what i have noticed, the car shakes violently, and feels as if it pulling apart. You here air seepage through the closed doors and windows. The car pulls hard in every direction. And the annoying high pitched whistle noise.

There are quite a few things you can do to make the car more stable, including heavy suspension mods, And body modifications to reduce your drag.

the car feels like it is being torn apart at EVERY seem. every movement is exagerated. plus the front end feels so light you'd think it was going to come up and flip you over.

I remember a giant list someone posted once, that had a bunch of cars and what their actual top speed was (minus the governor of course).

Maybe someone knows what I'm talking about and can find that list again.....

what? It feels like ur cars are gonna fall apart??? are you serious?/ I mean, maybe I was payin more attention to smokin the mustang, or the state trooper that was crossing the street, or the red light infront of me, but I have more suspension problems then the world knows what to do with plus its stock and it felt fine to me! Goin downhill, on a straight away on a bridge with cross winds and a 50 shot. My gps read out 130 last I looked before we quit.

How did everyone else know they were doin 130?

Well:
1) I never did overclock the speed limiter on open public roads.

2) They do make 140MPH clusters you know.

some people are a little more sensative when it comes to 'feeling' thier cars out. (but then again some are just paranoid ) either way......

I have had quite a few other cars up 140-150 mph. and I know how to handle myself up there, done it more times than I should say without proper legal representation. cars like corvettes, trans ams, mustangs, supras, will suck down to the road at that speed. you can brake and make reasonable turns and avoid hazards and be able to feel exactly what the car is doing and will do. however, when I had the cavi bouncing off the 108 limiter I could feel the cars unpredictability in lane changes and its tendancy that, once you start to turn it, it doesn't want to stop turning. nor does it want to stop anytime soon. pushing a j-body up that high is definatly not for a beginner

2)... Yes, they do, but that doesn't get rid of the 108 limiter. The 140mph speedo is just a canadian cluster with a US face on it. The limiter is in the ECU, not the cluster.

reminds me of some of the cars I used to have that had 85mph speedo's. I have taken more than a couple kids lunch money becouse they thought thier honda with the 140mph speedo could beat my heads/cam/spray caprice becouse I only had an 85mph speedo

though this isnt a ecotec, but my previous car 94 saturn sc2 hit 120 no probs with some mods, went past that and kept blowing trannies, they are weak as hell in saturns atleast back then. ive done 135 in my 03 sunfire, but that was using nitrous

how much did that car weigh? Those dohc motors were no joke, low hp, but man, I swear that car had to have like no weight, especially being made out of plastic. Too bad they made their trannies out of plastic too. How many did you go thru? My bro is on his third now on his 2K.
