Ok Someone Talk ME iNTO OR oUT oF tHIS

im really wanting to do an engine swap on my 99 cavy its a 5 speed and i love it its just too slow. anywho ive been wanting to do the ecotec swap for wuit some time but not sure how simple or how hard this swap will be.

ive heard people say its takin then anywhere from 2-3 days to 2-4 weeks. my car is a daily driver and im not sure i can stay down for 2-4 weeks or even a week. the thing that sucks is , is that this will be my very first engine swap or my very first engine anything. of course ill have help from my father who knows a bit about cars and a few friends who knows about as much as me.

im sure that the whole swap will cost more than i want it too but i guess that something ill have to live with. also ive read the tutorial. and it says he ripped out all the inerior and had to rerun all the old cables. i was under the impression that the ecotec acted as a plug and play.

so how much am i lookin at spending and time wise. and how much of a headache will this be.

well your better off swaping in a 2.4 , it will require less work for your cav

to swap a eco you will need to get new frame mounts for the trans as the getrag trans has different mount locations , and this will require alot of cutting and welding

plus the 00- car have alot different computer systems and wiring , so staying with 99-older is your best bet for a quick weekend project

Sort of along the lines of what he said. I have done a ecotec swap on a J, and getting ready to do another one. If you do not have any car knowledge, and none on J's I would not recommend it. For your car you need to swap engine bay wiring, inside wiring everything. Fuel lines, I would even recommend the fuel tank. As state the tranny brackets are different (but really that is easy). TO do a ecotec swap in your car you would be best off find a wreck 2002 + with the ecotec 5 speed and taking everything from it. For someone who knows next to knowing about J's and motor swaping, you have a good week of work ahead of you in the swap. Cost well depending on what it cost to get the car 1000.00-1500.00. Normally you can seel the car to a junkyard for $75-100. If you are looking for something to be quicker than what you have and good, the 2.4 is a good swap, and stock for stock has a little more power. If you have bigger plans the ecotec might be your better option.

ok as limited as i am , i also was thinking bout doing this swap but its not worth it for me

yes all the wiring harness's need to be changed
new computer
as far as i know , new tranny <2.2 owner question>
new mounts
$$$$
all tranny hardware

and if its a daily driver dont bother youll be down a few weeks
unless you know exactly what you are doing, and everyone helping has limited knowledge then you can expect it to take time

basically what im saying is unless your experienced with mechanics , dont bother man ...not to be rude
...if ya wanna go faster take the money your gonna use for the swap, and sink it into some stuff for your 2.2.........assuming you dont have much
<and assuming you have an intake and and exhaust , if not go for these first >

throttle body
cam
header
fuel rail
fuel pressure reg
ign system
or a turbo kit
Not sure bout availables for 2.2's , i have a 2.4

you can prob get all that stuff for the same price as a swap
and most of that stuff is easy to put on , and wont lead to much down time

thats my opinion.............lataz

I've driven all of the above. 2.2's are dogs SORRY don't shoot! But its true 2.4's are way better. It may be easier to swap in then an ECOTEC but the ECO's are real good!
The two engines are so close that it useually turns into a drivers race so I'd say which ever way is earier and cheeoer go that way. You'll love the diff over the 2.2.

In my opinion, you should not do it. There is a lot of work involved in this swap, and with the knowledge you say you have, you will never get it finished. If you do decide to do it, I would do a LOT of research on the swap before even attempting it, as well as doing a lot of pricing to see how much it will cost and if it will even be worth it in the end. Just my opinion.

If he does the work himself he can do the swap for less than all those mods added up.

As it has been said with your experience expect a couple weeks to get it all done. That is if you have everything there when you start. Also things I left out before. You will need a radiator (that part can be worked around, but easier if you have a ecotec one). You will need to swap the ignition switch as well.

altogether yes , an eco tec swap isnt gonna cost and less then 1500, and thats if ya buy a salvage car with good motor , and wiring harness's and suuch forth , although buying a motor your still gonna have to buy harnes'sand ecm and so forth and then your talking even bigger bucks more than likely ,

thats why i mentioned just up grading what he has , OR buy a turbo kit , with a lil shopping around and looking through classifieds he can prob get all those parts plus some for less than 1500, or buy a stage 1 turbo kit ..........dont deal with 2.2's so i cant talk bout gains but ............yeah 2.2's are junk ............but they are modifiable

i can only speak from my opinion and the home work i did when i was gonna swap out my 2.4 ..................and its just more economic for me to place the money into other things ...........of course im also not building a super fast drag car ,just wanna stay ahead of a few local smart a$$ honda owners

ultimately, if he can do it cheaper then i could go for it if its what he wants .........but for his experience and lack of wanting down time ..........he is just better off spending the money elswhere ..........and building off what he has
that again is just an opinion ........

All those parts you listed to mod his 2.2 will cost over 1500.00. I can buy a salavaged car for about 900-1400.

gues im goin to try to build up my 2200. seems like the smartest thing to do. cause that way im not spending 1200 dollars all at one time its spread out . and sounds liek most of the things are bolt on anyway pretty sure i can do that anyway. ok well sounds good to me. alot less hassle and i wont have to wait as long to get started. thanks everyone for your great responses. i thank and appreciate you all.

there won't be any downtime if you pick up a spare OHV from Ebay or the local salvage yard for $200-300 and build it up while its out of the car... For the $1500 or so dollars you'd pay for a STOCK 130 whp 2.4 or Eco swap, you can build yourself an OHV that makes at least 150 whp, and doesn't require rewiring your entire car.

Look up Scrufdog and Event(Dam-It-Muffins) as they have both built very respectable OHV engines... Scrufs AUTO puts down 177 to the wheel. Duplicate his setup on a manual trans and guess what? Over 180 all motor hp at the wheels... and note that scruf was still on a stock header, and there is plenty more to be done at that point.

OHV as i've said about a million times now, comes down to either boost, or cams, compression, and portwork.

First off you have not won crap. The mods you first list, you did not price all of them. A turbo kit would be 1500.00 by it's self, plus fuel rail (not really needed), and FPR, those things you listed.

I agree it is a big job to do for what he knows.
Now if bolt on parts for a 2.2 will give him what he needs then great, and he is better off. He will still lose to a 2.2 or 2.4. NOw if he is to open up a 2.2 and build it for more power, boost, or nitrous, he will spend way more than 1500.00. He really needs to decide what he wants to do with the car, his long term plans.

On a side note I can get you a 2200 full motor, with spun rod bearing, or a just a 2.2 block, if you want to start building.
