I own a 2000 pontiac sunfire se coupe and I have noticed that the rev cuts off at about 4000 rpms. I know all of the risks involved in removing or tweaking a rev or rpm limiter. and before you guys attack me and call me stupid for wanting to do this, dont worry, like I said, I am not stupid and will not dmage my vehicle in any way.
but anywho, I was wondering if it is possible, how do I remove or modify the rev or rpm limiter on this car?
Stand alone fuel management system = LOTS OF MONEY.
And i beleive your revving your auto in neutral? The limiter is there for a reason.

what he said

Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!
your revs cut at 4
neutral and park , same results either way, but like I said, I know my limitations, I am not going to rev the hell our of my engine...lol That is a bad thing and bad things cost money which seems to be hard to come by now days.
Yu rev your auto?
whats the need to rev over 4000rpm's? If it's for racing, wouldn't you have a pretty bad traction problem reving higher than that?

please dont neutral drop it...... i am convinced that is the best way to kill your transmission. oh yea i accidentaly knocked it into neutral one time i was still gasing it, turns out if your car is rolling at around 25mph or faster it will go past the rev limiter......

the auto trans cars will only rev to 4000 , its to prevent damage to the trans from droping it in gear at full throttle , and causing damage
Dont worry, I dont neutral drop. I definitely do not want to f*** my engine up at all. I just want to be able to rev my engine just a little bit above 4000 just for a piece of mind. I have a great sounding exhaust, but it sounds like sh** whenever my rev cuts out at 4000. It sounds as if my car is back firing and it just gets on my nerves. I know that is all I need, I dont plan on abusing my car by reving my engine to the max, just a little bit. I have asked a professional about this, he says its okay for what I want to do, he just doesnt know about removing or modifying the limiter on a sunfire.
Thanks for all of the replies though, so far, you guys have been a pretty good help.
And if you recommend that I should just leave my rev alone, I will.
I think your alone on this one, I dont thinkn anyone will tell you incase you do blow something and you come back here making a fuss about them not telling you something.
LOL... Ahhh dont worry about me, I never cause a fuss, but either way, I'm content on the situation. I was just wondering if it could be done and if so, how. But if its gonna compramize the performance and life of my engine in any way, then I dont wanna mess with it.
so it sounds like @!#$ cuz it cuts off at 4k, well my car goes to about 5800rpms and if i rev, its usually between 3,000-3,500 rpms for the nice rumble. If you dont want it to sound like crap dont hit the limiter at 4k stay under it. Revving that high is just unwanted noise.
Actually you can find the sweet spot between nuetrul and reverse, or even drive where it will not be in gear and you can still rev it freely. I have a auto boosted car. I use to hate that same thing. Just becareful to not move the shifter too much and get it in gear while reving.

My mom's car's the same rev limiter at 4000RPM, it's an automatic. ('98 cavalier)
to finally answer your question joe, the rev limiter is programmed into your pcm. there's no way to remove it on an automatic or manual; you can only lower it with an aftermarket ignition system. To raise/remove a rev limiter, you need a complete standalone engine management system like the AEM EMS, which is thousands of dollars.
last i heard JBP was offering computer flashes that can raise the rev limiter.... Haven't heard anything about the quality of their flashes, but they do seem a little on the pricey side at around $700.

My mom's 2000 Cavalier cuts out at 4000rpm's when you rev. If you really know how to push an automatic trans when driving thuogh, that limiter won't work. I've gotten her car up to about 5400rpm's when pushing the car hard while driving.
there is no need to go above 4000 RPM when you aren't in gear. simply no need. to rev? ok... lol...

Oh I can get it to rev pretty good when I'm driving. One day I had to gun it because I pulled out in ftont of an suv that appeared to be turning off (turn signal was on)... and I noticed that the needle hit about 6000 and almost red lined. I wouldnt normally do that though, it was just do to the circumstances.
But anywho, if it is gonna cost hundreds to thouusands of dollars just to sound good, I'd rather trade in my car for something more powerful before I did something like that.

Not so. At least in my case. there was a need to rev over 4k while not in drive.
