Stock Intake box

A friend of mine told me that he just bought a K&N square filter for the stock box, and just cut some holes on the box to let more air in. Has anyone tried this with a J body. Would it give you the same effect and sound of an aftermarket intake with a cone filter?

I don't know about the sound, I think the aluminium tube contributes.
Adding holes to the stock airbox sitting around a cone filter doesn't make sense. I would just take the air box out. You'll get the performance advantage of a more free-flowing filter, as well as avoiding the restrictive shape and length of the air box and bong. Most aftermarket intakes also replace the black box on top of the throttle body, so you'd still have the restriction there.

^^ He didnt say anything about a cone filter.

Adding holes UNDER the filter will allow more air in, easier, but will not contribute to sound.

It won't help a whole lot anyways since the rest of the air intake system is still restrictive.

If you plan on keeping the stock intake, but want a little better performance, putting holes BELOW the filter may help a little only if remove the extra tube...

The 'extra tube' is inside the black plastic/rubber flex tube, where it meets the 2200 airbox. If you take the hose off of the 2200 box you will see this small black plastic tube. Take it out, and put the hose back on. This will help a little, and is probably the easiest thing to do for "stock performance".

Well his registry says that he made a BOMZ intake fit. Normally that is done by notching the airbox so the rim of the cone filter can sit inside.

The "extra" tube on the 98-00 2.2L is called the tuner tube.

Sorry i should update that. I made the BOMZ one fit with the actual stainless steel tube and everything.. but it wasnt very secure so i took it out. Im now debating whether i should make a bracket for it or just leave it stock and possibly making those holes.
