Cleaning foam filter
Wednesday, June 22, 2005 10:04 AM
I have a weapon r foam filter that needs to be cleaned, but local auto parts stores dont carry any foam filter cleaner and oil.

Would it be ok to clean it with an air filter cleaning and oil kit such as the K&N one thats not specifically for foam filters?

From weapon r web site: "NOTE: DO NOT USE ANY OTHER CLEANER KIT FOR THESE FILTERS, WARRANTY OF WEAPON*R AIR FILTER WILL BE VOIDED! "
-Possibly so they can sell the cleaner kit for $20 plus s&h

From random googling: http://www.volvospeed.com/Repair/filterclean.php
-Which says it is ok.

Thanks.

I used the regular K&N cleaner on mine and it doesn't seem to make a difference. Except that you have to rinse it over and over and over. The foam filter likes to hold onto the cleaner residue. I've been running it for about 2000 miles with no problems.
On the google thing I saw they air/heat dry theirs... bad idea IMO. The foam is more fragile than a regular filter. Let it air dry after you thoroughly rinse it.

let's talk about how necessary it is:

what uses standard paper style filters these days? just about every car stock, aftermarket filters, etc etc.
what uses foam filters these days? lawn mowers and cars that never see the street. foam filters hold dust and you can't really clean them. plus once they are wet, you are screwed. you can try spraying it with a lil WD40, but that's not going to help much. put a K&N filter on it. Hell you can get APC Intimidator filters for like $20 at AutoZone.

I'm suprised at some of the responses of people on here. I'll answer your question.

You need the actual cleaner from Weapon-R...it's a couple dollars. It's an actual spray that you need to purchase. It's very simple. If you want to purchase it, go to www.definedparts.com and e-mail the e-mail address that's listed on there.

If you have more questions about it you can either contact me or contact weapon-r themselves, they have good customer service reps

our point is, foam filters are crap. that's why they are extremely cheap. they don't do much of a job and are more prone to letting bad things into your throttle body. but hey if you want dust in your combustion chamber... then cool.

and i have money to donate to the Adam Needs a K&N Filter Fund if you have money to donate to the Abe Needs Boost fund.

Thanks guys.

For those who want me to buy a K&N, which one should I get?

The intake is the one they call 'dragon'. Looks to be about 2.5"... cant find exact specifications... have to get off my lazy ass and measure.
Anyone know?

bingo....

the cleaners that they have for foam, may clean the apperanace and color, but the dirt thats trapped in the pourous areas of foam, doesnt come back out, which hinders flow.

foam filters on most intakes are like buying houshold appliances. it gives you a starter pack that lasts for a small bit of time, there after its up to you to buy something that will last.
