Just wondering what kind of upgrades are out there for a 97 2.2 5spd. Just wondering what u folks have done out there to ur rides too. I have seen some parts for the 2.2 but i see more for the 2.4. I have found the following for the 2.2: intake, headers, short shifter, msd coils and modules, catback and clutch. I found a website that sells me a rebuilding kit for the 2.2 with different compression ratios from 8.5,9.0,9.5 and 10.0. Wich ratio is good for a turbo or supercharger if i want to get it later. Also, at what point do u have to use super unleaded is it above 10.0? What about rebuilding the head, havent seen anything about cams or valves. How about a complete engine to buy instead of rebuilding. Injectors, fuel pump, TB intake, pulleys. Is there anything for the 5spd in making it stronger if u get to 180hp or more. Any help would be appreciated and any recommended catalogs would help. I already get Jegs and Summit.
you can always read the performance FAQ at the top of this forum for info and links.
with turbo or supercharger. low compression is best and you use higher octane if you have boost (Turbo, charger, or nitrous) or if you have a higher compression engine
and it is possible to get 180 hp from your engine, but it takes time and money.

Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!
The only web site that caught my attention was jbodperformance.com. They have a complete crate enging for about 2,700 and about 1700 for the head. Thats about 4,400 for a complete engine. Not including installation, headers, flywheel, msd, clutch. I guess i am looking at 6,000 for a total engine swap. That aint cheap. About that car for 1,800 in Texas and added another 1,000 in odds and ends. I am good for 3,000 dont know about the rest.
I couldnt help but notice you found a wesite that told you how to go from 8.5 to 9.5 com. i was told today by a machine shop that you would notice a big difference there and was wondering what website that was.
The website I found is as follows
http://www.importperformanceparts.net/imports/pek-cavalier.html this goies directly to the rebuild kit. Here what comes in the kit got the compression ratios wrong.

Cost is 849. Now, I have read the FAQ, several times, and still don't know whats really out there for the 2.2 . What I was hoping for was that those that have modified their 2.2 would enlighten me what they did and the trouble they went through. Like I said what is really out there for the 2.2. I see injectors for the 2.4 but are they compatible with 2.2. Info like this i am looking for, first hand info.TIA
Xian G thanks for those sites some did help but there is still some questions that have to be asked. Hopefully someone will share what they have done to modify the cav. Thanks everyone for their input.
Engine swap for 6 Grand??!!! No reason to pay that much if you shop around. necoengines.com gave me an estimate to put in an Ecotec motor for just a hair over 3 grand. That's all parts AND installation. at woodfins.com you can get a used engine (complete) for around 1200, then installation (at least the places I've called around where I live- it'll vary from place to place) is about 750-1100. That's assuming you don't just get a cherry picker, a good tool set, and a few friends and do it yourself.
But aside from boltons, there is always the good-ol port and polish. I also believe that at least one of those websites you've already got also sells roller rockers (according to them, good for about 8 hp). Good luck man.
I may not be the sharpest crayon in the box, but at least I'm a pretty color
You can pretty much do anything you want to a 2.2 just as an other motor except your just not DOHC. You can do exhaust work & intake for starters and work your way into the motor or if you plan on boosting, you can do that also. It all depends how much power you want. What were your plans?
Defenitley check out
www.jbodyperformance.com, they support the 2.2s highly.

I am thinking about keeping it aspirated, I might just get a new block that is stock and change the cam on a new head, or get the tricked out block with a stock head and change the cam in it. I am only looking to make between 160-180 hp. I Still like my 37mpg I am getting would hate to go below 32. Right now I am going to get a header(ceramic coated), an intake and short shifter and then ill see how things go. I will also get a center force clutch, 209.99 and fidanza flywheel. At a cost about 1,500 and I still dont have rims. I got the 15's stock. I would also like to supercharge my 98 Z-71, thats 3,500. Then my truck would be finished. Hmmm which way to go. Thanks for those other website i'll keep looking would like to ge a complete engine with more than stock for about 2000-2500. I seen a stock for about 1700. I will keep looking and thanks for the help. Oh yeah, jbodyperformance has the block for 2700 and the head for 1700 thats why I said like 6000 for complete engine and install.
Well the more horsepower you make the more fuel you will need to support it which in turn will hurt gas mileage, and boosting will make that figure even lower
