Saab swap?
Monday, June 06, 2005 8:38 AM
i was reading up on boost thread about the chargers and what not... then i got thinking about the cobalt ss.. 2.0 supercharged... then i got thinking again.. the Saab is a 2.0 or is it a 2.2... anyway... stock turbo since GM bought out or some of Saab... i think it would work.

so when my 2.4 goes (not anytime soon i hope) would it be possible to swap in the Saab Turbo engine (with the all that is needed as well) and would it be worth it?

any thoughts?

The saab 9-3 is a turbo 2.0 very similar to the LSJ motor

i would think time and money are the only issues. the ECU, wiring harness, everything is under the hood on all eco powered cars. now making the saab engine harness interface with the GM chassis harness may be a challenge, or they may be an simple bolt up, cant say for sure. the saab engine is a 2.0 turbo version of the Eco...210 hp 220 ft-lb TQif i remeber correct. wold prob be eaiser to use the saab tranny as well...basically swap everything under the hood. ive contemplated this idea many times, would love to know how difficult it actually is. also may have to do some trick intercooler piping.

The biggest problem with the swap would be the electronics.

SAAB:s Ecotec engine (L850) have a flybywire tb and a engine managementsystem called Trionic7(developed by SAAB).

This is a hightech-system that is almost impossible to reprogram (i know some of the guys that has designed it) and it will not be able to trick it with a std tb.

Any gearbox that fits a L61 fits right on with some minor changes to the clutch.

SAAB uses a gearbox called F35 (5-speed) or F40 (6-speed).
The F40 is almost bulletproof. it can take up to 800hp and can be daily driven with 450-500hp.

Here is a swap made by a friend of mine.

Itīs in Swedish, but i think you like the pics.

This car had a L61.
The Trionic7 has been changed to a Nira system (same guys that made the Trionic has made a aftermarket system that has the same nice features) to get around the fbw-tb.
