I am doing a bench press on a fuel pump on a 1989 pontiac 6000. Question is: Is the pump suppose to pulsate from 25lbs to 30lbs or is it suppose to run continuous at 35lbs?? Car has 185,000 KM. Please get back asap
You mean 25-30 PSI, not LBS right?
What do you mean it pulsates? The PSI goes up and down for a second, or what?

The fuel pressure has a spec that has to be a certain psi.You should verify by a chilton or haynes manual for a exact spec, which the fuel pump is required to run at all the time.So if ur car says spec wise 25psi and it's fluxuenting below that yes U need a NEW pump. Those are clear signs of it going bad and will leave u on the side of the road when the pump finally burns up or goes out.The car losing power or sputtering or choking are also signs of a bad pump as well.I know this will help,my cavs pump did the same thing its a 85 and it just had the symptoms a day or so then died.I replaced mine by dropping the tank and buying a new ac delco fuel pump at auto zone 45.00.The cost to have a shop do it will cost u dearly.Took me 3hrs total and thats putting away my tools and clean up.
