bad wheel bearing
Tuesday, August 23, 2005 10:27 PM
I have a terrible squeak when Im going below 40 mph. I could have it all the time but I dont hear it over 40. The only thing that I could think of is the wheel bearing and the cv axle. What should I look for. How do I tell if the wheel bearing or cv axle is bad.

Wheel bearing, one way to tell is if you jack up the wheel and try to pull it back and forth from top to bottom. If there is play its bad. As I found out though just because there isn't play doesn't mean its good. I had 2 bad ones both with different symptoms, when I got them both replaced it felt like a completely new car. It had 160,000 on it at the time.

CV shaft, check the boots and make sure they aren't torn or leaking fluid.

i'm not 100% but I think if u have a bad CV shaft you can hear it ticking when you have load on it. Also I think that you can grab the shaft and push and pull on it and if there is play you need ot replace or rebuild.

I'm not 100%, but thought I would add that in just incase. Some please comment I'd like to know if I am right or wrong.

from my experience a bad cv shaft will usually cause vibrations while driving. it is very similiar to a wheel that is out of balance and it may eventually smooth out at higher speed. and yes sometimes they do make a clicking sound. a quick visual inspection of the boots is a good idea because if a boot is torn then dirt is more than likely in the cv joints and it has gone bad.

a wheel bearing will tend to give you a humming like sound while you are driving. try turning the wheel a little left to right...might wanna make sure no one else is on the road...you will probably feel it in the steering wheel and can possibly hear it making a humming sound while turning. mine both made this kind of sound and it was worse while turning to the left.
