Major Power Problems (please help quick!!!!!)
Tuesday, August 23, 2005 8:07 PM
First of all, i did have a bunch of stuff done to my car today, i had the header installed, and aem alternator pulley, and a lower mount. First was the header, i had it installed at the shop and I drove it around for awhile after, no problems. After i got home, I installed the pulley and mount. After i finished these things, i took the car out to go to Walmart, half way there, my ABS light, and engine light came on, i got to 'walmart with no other problems then that though. After i left, i was on the way back home and my G Tech started freaking out, and the neons turned off. Then shortly after that, every light in the car went out, headlights, taillights, radio, if it lights up, it didnt anymore. Im guessing probally because of the pulley i put in, has anyone else had these problems? Any feedback would be great, i really dont know what to do right now.

Hi Robert

What car do you have? -it's not in your profile.

But anyhow if you put on a smaller crankshaft pulley or a larger alternator pulley I would expect those results as the alternator is spinning more slowly at the same engine revs. The best way is to check the battery voltage at your battery terminals:-

1. With the engine stopped (Fully charge your battery with a charger first)

2. With the engine running at idle but you may have to rev yours to 2-3,000 momentarily to see an increase in the alternator voltage-because of the pulley change.

You should have 12volt+ in 1. and 14.5 + in the other.

Is it possible that you/someone else broke a cable end or wire when you did any of the mods?

If the alternator is putting out 14+ volts AND the connection to the battery AND earth is good it would point to the battery but I would find it odd that this occurred at this time, although they do not like being run right down.

I had my '93 2.2 Cav stop very near home due to a garage changing the head gasket(Before I realized how easy it was) and during the refitting of the alternator they had broken the big red BATT cable ring crimp at the alternator.
I mention this because the Charge light circuit was still working correctly and the first indication was the ABS light coming on.

This link by Joe Gilbeau has as much or as little information as you need-I use it a lot.
It even starts with a very simple test.

Hope there is food for thought here anyways

Good Luck

Thanks for your help, sorry i couldnt reply sooner, but my internet has been down the last few days or so. Anyway, i took her to the shop today and they said that two of the wires were yanked out of the alternator (i figure it must have been me when i was working on it) so i got that fixed, but now, i was driving tonight and my check engine light is on. I want to get one of teh OBD2 code readers so i can test it and see which code its throwing. If u have any input on this, im open for suggestions, once again, thanks for your help bro.

you could always take it to autozone and they will check it for free. if i had to guess what the code is it is probably a p1133 slow switching oxygen sensor. i know that is the code i got when i instaled my header. you will probably need a new O2 sensor if that is the code you are getting. let us know and someone will be able to help you out.

That sounds like the alternator not charging, I have that pulley too but I run a stock stereo and no neons or anything like that.
