Engine Replacement?
Tuesday, February 17, 2009 7:41 PM

Currently, I'm thinking about replacing my engine on my 1996 cavalier 2.2. Because, i'm tired on spending money on repair after repair.... So far, I have checked on www.car-parts.com for engines. I did find some with about 87k miles on them, for $ 650.00. Thats cool, but only have a 30 day warranty. The other place, i checked was Michigan Motor Exchange. With them, for a rebuilt engine, will run me about $2,300 with a 3 year warranty. But really cant afford them. And lastly, i found a engine for $1,750 with a 1 year warranty. Thinking about going with the engine for 1,750. I'm just confused on everything, and any advice would be great. Thanks

There's WAYYY better things you could spend $1750 on man... hell, you could replace the car for that much.

Is there a reason you think replacing the engine willl take care of all the repairs?? It's a 13 year old car... hate to say it, but it's gonna need regular maintenance, which will nickel and dime you. I'm not trying to sound like a dick, but what would happen if you put a $1750 engine in and the tranny went bad, or the car was totalled? you would never get your money back out of it.

for what it's worth, hope it helps.

You said you found an engine with 87K for $650, but only a 30 day warranty. Used engine warranties are usually no better than the company offering them and you're still taking your chances. If the engine has been tested, has good compression and oil pressure, I'd say give that one a go and pocket the difference.

In my opinon, If you really enjoy the car spend the money on a completely rebuilt motor, Cause youre the one that driving the car all the time. Plus you have other opinions buying another car. Then youre stuck with car payments, Least if u own the car out right U are only paying for new engine, Which will last you a long time with all the oil changes and preventive maintain done. Really $2,300 is nothing compared to buying another ride in which you may get lucky with a good car .Or some one else head aches. Like for me Ive got 84 Chev 4x4 shortbox pickup, Looks nasty on the outside, Solid motor and drive train, Like a say it was a money pit at first, I got more money in motor and drive train, What the truck is worth. I love the truck, Thats why I keep it running.

Good Luck with youre choice.

for $1700 you could rebuild your own engine...hell you could pull it and drop it off and the machine shop and they could rebuilt it for you.

that is pretty pricey. I would go cheap on the engine. Try local yards.

Hell, there was a dealer in ohio selling new crate 2.2's for like $750 not that long ago.

But you could seriously buy a cheap motor, and do a cheap rebuild on it for way less than $1750....prolly + shipping.

find a cheap motor, CHEAP MOTOR. tear it apart, rebuild piece by piece, with "the good stuff" keep your car running. drop in said motor when you feel the need, or finish. swap over replaced parts. = win.

Hey guys, i would like to thank all yall for the great advice on engine replacement. I'm leaning more towards, going with a rebulit engine. I called my local chevy dealer, yesterday, and was told the 2.2 engines for the cavalier is discontinued. and also, i will continue to chevy for local engines,
