Hey all,
I have a 99 z24 w/ about 60k on the motor. I bought the car w/ a bad motor & swapped in one w/ less miles. I started using this as my daily driver because its alot nicer than my 94 Protege.
Aaanyway- I notice I only get about 250 +/- miles per tank. I do alot of mixed driving, but never really beat on the car.. The mileage seems to stay around the same everytime.
The car runs great, but it does sputter for several seconds on a cold startup.
I'm think it's so bad because I'm used to my Mazda which gets about 400 miles on a tank.. I put about 13 gallons into each vehicle when I fill them up.
I don't know what kinda mileage I'm supposed to be getting out of this thing, but I feel mine is low.
Can we hear what kinda mpg everyone is getting out of their 2.4s? And possibly some suggestions on why mine is so low..?
Thanks.
Change the spark plugs, wires and air filter. if that does not pushes you car to about 280+ miles per tank... then try changing the fuel filter (about 15 bucks).
Either way, MPG is based on how you drive your car, and what type of gas you put on.
just my opinion.
**fresh**
Well..
The spark plugs & air filter only have several hundred miles on them- they are new.
The car does not have spark plug wires.
I do mixed driving- but mostly cruising 40-50mph on "country" roads. The car is an auto.
I will change the fuel filter this weekend- Im just wondering if the sputtering on startup is some kind of indication that the car is not running all that well- which is why my mileage sucks.
My auto cavalier does about 220-250 per tank city, regardless of how i drive. Highway only it does about 360-400. I think this has been discussed before, mainly with many ppl complaining about their auto Z's only doing around 250, so I think you're in the clear.

normal.....especially in a hilly region. when i lived in pittsburgh i got 225-250. now that i live in florida i get 280-300
Oh okay... So I guess its not really that bad.
Right now, I'm at a quarter tank & the ODO says 225 mi. The rest of the gas will go quickly though..
I just had no idea of what an avg. for an auto 2.4 might be.. My other car is built & boosted, so I can't go by that anymore...
Alright !!
I just topped my car off last night.. I got 280 Miles out of 12.5 gallons..
It comes out to approx. 22.4 mpg.. I guess thats not as bad as I thought...
Thanks guys !!
I consistently average about 20.5 city.

nigga it happens, the sputter. what i do is higger octane gas, tire presure and 5 months tuneups. Dont forget it cost more to maintain for a cheaper car then it is for a new car. o and the rims dont help . come on nigga its simple math. if its not factory then your @!#$ or better terms get that wallet out. but look at the brightside u look good rolling to the gas station. lol thats how i do it

Oh damn !!! Wusup my nigga!?!
Its cool- I just didn't realize how crappy the MPG was on this beeeetch...
Also, Its got the stock rims on it- pretty much everything about the car is stock, so thats how I roll.. Deep as @!#$ !!! I still look good pulling up to the gas station tho !!!
I usually pull up, slap some hoes, slang some rocks & then pump my gas.
the factory sticker says 21mpg city....28mpg hwy
Hmm, have you tried not driving so hard?

WHAT THE @!#$ DID YOU JUST SAY TO ME !?!?!?
Might as well just ask me not to breathe anymore !!!!
inappropriate, inappropriate...
You never mentioned how deep you bury the loud pedal, so I always consider that a possibility. Remember, you are running a 2.4L engine, it's going to burn more gas compared to a 1.8 or 1.5 engine.
